* Great Britain = England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. BBC's charter covers all of those countries.
* Do not include ending punctuation.  If &Dagger;2 is present, it may be retained, but delete any periods preceding it.
* Use multiple {{subfield|a}} for each country with no additional punctuation. Order is not important.  Punctuation shouldn't matter, but it does in Enterprise, hopefully not forever.

Recording "United States" is important, but if you're pressed for time, begin with these options.
Suggested priorities:
*Television programs.  We didn't use genre headings for television programs.
* Foreign television programs, since these never received the country genre headings that foreign films did in the CCS database
*If your videorecordings are arranged by country or language, use a call number browse to find these titles.
* English-language films and television programs, for the same reason

Add a 257 field to incoming records for all video recordings.[1] Retrospectively add a 257 field to other records for video recordings as encountered. If country of production absolutely cannot be determined, this field may be omitted.

Identifying and selecting countries

  • Use the country that corresponds to the production company named in the statement of responsibility.
  • If multiple companies are involved, use catalogers' judgment to decide how important each is. Generally disregard companies that only provide funding.
  • Check Internet Movie Database or Wikipedia if unsure.
  • Beware of countries that have changed headings over time (e.g., Germany, Russia, Hong Kong, Czechoslovakia). Check their authority records for guidance.
  • Use "Great Britain" for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (e.g., BBC).
