For the CCS database, the only acceptable thesauri for English language subject headings are LCSH and LCAC, and the only acceptable thesauri for genre headings are LCGFT and the Local genre headings list.
For more information and for information on fields not covered here, see OCLC's Bibliographic Formats and Standards, the MARC21 documentation, and the Library of Congress' Subject Cataloging Manual: Subject Headings.
- Every fully cataloged record in the CCS database must have at least one LCSH heading, or at least one 655 heading if no 600-651 headings apply.
- Every record for a single work of prose fiction in the CCS database must have at least one LCSH heading AND any 655 headings that are appropriate; every record for a textual collection in the CCS database must have at least one 655 heading.
- Always add a 655 for concepts that are expressed in 6XX $v, when one is authorized. Continue using 6XX $v.
- Be as specific as possible (e.g. $v Fiction --> 655 Science fiction; use of specific 655 Pop-up books & 655 Textured books instead of general 655 Toy and movable books)
- Always code "[Language] language materials" as, e.g. "655 _7 French language materials.|2local", never as, e.g. "650 _1 French language materials." or "655 _1 French language materials."
- Use $v Specimens only for realia.
