When cataloging works by authors who use multiple names or pseudonyms, follow the guidelines provided by AACR2R, especially rule 22.2B.
If you come across an author whose works have been cataloged using older cataloging codes, which specified using one single heading, you may refer the matter to the Authorities Librarian who will revise the authority record. Sample authority record:
Old record:
100 1_ Allan, Mabel Esther 400 1_ Pilgrim, Anne 400 1_ Hagon, Priscilla 400 1_ Estoril, Jean
Revised record: [arn 367721]
100 1_ Allan, Mabel Esther 500 1_ Pilgrim, Anne, $d 1915- 500 1_ Hagon, Priscilla, $d 1915- 500 1_ Estoril, Jean, $d 1915- 663 For works of this author entered under other names, ...
If a work in the CCS database has been published under two different names, e.g., a book first published with a pseudonym on the title page and later with the author's real name, one name will be chosen to be the main entry on all editions of the work in the CCS database. Follow these procedures:
- Create a new record for the work in hand.
- Decide which name should be used as the single main entry.
If you are unsure which name to use, contact the Authorities Librarian. Existing records will be edited; notes will be made and cross references in authority records adjusted depending on the circumstances. CCS libraries will be notified of the change. Here are some examples.
- Original edition:
- Brown, Margaret Wise, 1910-1952.
- Little island / by Golden MacDonald ; with illustrations by Leonard Weisgard.
- Originally published under the pseudonym Golden MacDonald.
- Republished edition:
- Brown, Margaret Wise, 1910-1952.
- Little island / by Margaret Wise Brown ; with illustrations by Leonard Weisgard.
- Originally published in 1946 under the pseudonym Golden MacDonald.
When one author is using another author's characters, motifs, or style enter under the actual name of the author of the item in hand.
Please notify the Authorities Librarian when:
- Library of Congress bibliographic or authority records conflict with the above policies.
- Records in CCS database appear to be entered under real name rather than pseudonym as a result of older cataloging rules.
- Example:
- Chief source reads:
- Seaview Manor
- Elissa Grandower
- 1976.
- But record is entered under Hillary Waugh, "Elissa Grandower's" real name.
