Identifying and selecting countries
- Use the Internet Movie Database or Wikipedia. If there are multiple countries, use catalogers' judgment to decide how important each country is. Companies that only provide funding are probably not important.
- Some "lesser" videos may never get a 257 field, especially kidvids and nonfiction titles.
Recording countries
- Use the form found in the Name Authority File. This is mostly straightforward, except things like "Korea (South)"
- Beware of countries that changed headings: Germany, Russia, Hong Kong, Czechoslovakia. The authority records explain the differences and when they happened.
- Great Britain = England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. BBC's charter covers all of those countries.
- Use multiple ‡a for each country with no additional punctuation. Order is not important. Punctuation shouldn't matter, but it does in Enterprise, hopefully not forever.
Retro work
Recording "United States" is important, but if you're pressed for time, begin with these options.
- Television programs. We didn't use genre headings for television programs.
- If your videorecordings are arranged by country or language, use a call number browse to find these titles.
