Every fully cataloged record in the CCS database must have at least one LCSH heading, or at least one 655 heading if no 600-651 headings apply.


Every record for a single work of prose fiction in the CCS database must have at least one LCSH heading AND any [[Genre/form headings|655 headings]] that are appropriate; every record for a textual collection in the CCS database must have at least one 655 heading.
''Optionally'', any of the following may be added for resources in languages other than English:
*Bilindex (Spanish, {{subfield|2}}bidex)
*QLSP (Spanish, {{subfield|2}}qlsp)
*Polish subject headings for Polish-language material, etc.


Always add a 655 field for concepts that are expressed in 6XX &Dagger;v, when one is authorized. Continue using 6XX &Dagger;v.


Be as specific as possible (e.g. &Dagger;v Fiction --> 655 Science fiction; use of specific 655 Pop-up books & 655 Textured books instead of general 655 Toy and movable books)
*Every record must have at least one subject heading, or at least one 655 heading if no 600-651 headings apply.
*Every record for a single work of fiction must have at least one subject heading.

Follow these guidelines for subject and genre headings (6XX fields) in the CCS database. See also Children's subject headings and Foreign language materials for those types of resources.


Subject Headings (600, 610, 611, 630, 650, 651)

The following thesauri are acceptable. Delete all other subject headings:

  • Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)
  • Library of Congress Children’s Subject Headings (formerly LCAC)
  • Local subject headings (690, 691)


Optionally, any of the following may be added for resources in languages other than English:

  • Bilindex (Spanish, ‡2bidex)
  • QLSP (Spanish, ‡2qlsp)
  • Polish subject headings for Polish-language material, etc.


  • Every record must have at least one subject heading, or at least one 655 heading if no 600-651 headings apply.
  • Every record for a single work of fiction must have at least one subject heading.
  • Use subdivision ‡vSpecimens only for realia (e.g. Telescopes‡vSpecimens).


Genre/Form Headings (655)

The following thesauri are acceptable. Delete all other genre/form headings:


  • Always add any applicable genre/form headings, in a 655 field.
  • Be as specific as possible (e.g. Textured books, instead of the more general Toy and movable books)
  • Do not subdivide, or qualify by nationality, any headings in a 655 field.
